As we approach the holiest of the Christian holidays, another man dedicated to the well being of his fellow humans sits behind bars. Julian Assange’s exposure of corrupt governments and violent death through unnesscessary and illegal war does not sit well with those who profit form such devilish and treacherous activity. Let us all support John and Julian by keeping thier message alive.

Just as importantly, we remember John as part of a group of young Liverpool musicians who captured the energy of a young post-war generation, multiplied it and cast it back as a spell upon them. A recipe so successful that in just a few short years, not only had they won the hearts and minds of the world’s youth, they still manage to influence the thinkers, musicians, writers and artists of today.

It is sadly ironic that during an interview with Dave Sholin at the Dakota building just hours before his murder, Lennon had predicted his method of death stating: “I’ll probably be popped off by some loony.” It is reported that Chapman carried out the murder based upon fantastical perspectives he gained via the fictional Holden Caulfield’s experiences from the book Catcher in the Rye.

Our friend John was married twice. First to Cynthia Powell. She bore his first-born Julian Lennon who unfortunately did not enjoy a close relationship with his father. After John had a series of affairs with Yoko Ono, Cynthia sued John for divorce. John went on to marry Yoko Ono who later gave birth to John’s second son Sean. Although it is reported John too had affairs during his marriage with Yoko, she remained his partner to the end.

During Lennon’s last two years as a Beatle, he and Ono began public protests against the Vietnam War denouncing Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra and her support of the US war in Viet Nam. In 1969 Lennon sent back the MBE insignia Queen Elizabeth had bestowed upon him. When Lennon and Ono moved to New York City in August 1971, they befriended peace activists Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman. In 1972 Lennon was investigated by the FBI and nearly deported by the Nixon administration.

In addition to his music and anti-war stance, John was also known for his dry, often sarcastic humor as well as his other talents as a writer and artist. His short but eventful life has had a major impact on almost every human alive today. It would be interesting to know just what John would say and do about today’s state of affairs. So brothers and sisters, has anybody seen my old friend John?

Mother Earth will test the Hearts and Minds of Men this week and next.

In just a few hours, a two-week conference will begin in Copenhagen ending in a summit on Dec. 18. Representatives from over 190 countries are expected to attend and will seek commitments on measures necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to discuss ways to raise billions of dollars for aid to developing nations and clean energy technology.

Yvo de Boer, the man heading-up UN’s effort to forge a global warming deal, faces a difficult task in trying to pair off the differences in expectations between established industrial nations such as the US, Japan and the EU and emerging powers like China and India. Complicating matters are the needs of underdeveloped nations in Africa and the urgency of low-lying populated regions like the Maldives, Netherlands and New Orleans.

“What I would advocate for this conference, in spite of all of the attention, is keep it simple” says de Boer.

The next two weeks will be witness to how well the world’s leaders are able to cope with these challenges. Will they, as de Boers suggests, “simply” do the right thing for the earth? Or will they “complicate” matters and then claim they need more time to look at the science instead?

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets yesterday calling for a deal on climate change at the Copenhagen conference. Organizers, including Oxfam, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and W.W.F., estimated the turnout in London to have been about 40,000 although London police estimated the crowd to be half as many. Marches were also reported to have taken place in Glasgow, Belfast, Brussels, Paris and Dublin.

The next two weeks will be proof of our leaders’ resolve, and this time, the world is really watching.
